Congratulations to Amy Bradley Year 12 who has been selected to represent South East Wales in Long Jump, Triple Jump and Relay in the Welsh Schools' Athletic Championships at Brecon on the 3 July. Well done!

NEW SCHOOL UNIFORM

Dear Parent/Guardian

I am writing to inform you that after an extensive period of consultation, the Governing body have decided that the school will be introducing a new school uniform.

The new uniform will be compulsory for all Year 7 pupils who will be joining the school in September. For pupils already in the school there will be a period of one academic year during which either uniform can be worn. From September 2011 only the new uniform will be allowed. This should ensure parents are not exposed to additional costs if they have already recently purchased the old uniform and also provides extensive notice of the requirement for the whole school (Years 7 - 11) to move to the new uniform by September 2011. It is my expectation that as pupils grow out of the old uniform that parents will purchase the new one and so increasingly during the next academic year, the numbers of pupils wearing the new uniform will grow in the school.

The new uniform will comprise:

Black blazer with embroidered gold logo
Black tie with two thin gold stripes
White shirts (short or long sleeves)
Black trousers (formal) or black skirts
Black shoes
Optional black jumper with embroidered gold logo

The only items that we stipulate that should be purchased from our supplier will be the blazer, tie and optional jumper. All the other items may be purchased from other retailers, although can be purchased from our supplier if parents wish to do so. At present the games/PE kit will remain.

Arrangements are being put in place for parents to order the new uniform at the school, as I am aware that parents may wish their child to try on the uniform to ensure the sizes are correct.

On the following evenings, the uniform supplier will be in school for parents to purchase/order uniform:-

Thursday 17 June 2010 5.00pm – 7.00pm

New Intake Evening Thursday 1 July 2010 5.30pm – 8.00pm

Thursday 15 July 2010 5.00pm – 7.00pm

Arrangements are currently being made for the option to order on-line, direct from the supplier’s website and parents will be informed as soon as this facility becomes available.

I sincerely hope that our new uniform will raise pupil self-esteem and the profile of the school in the community. I also hope that the uniform will contribute positively to the ethos of the school, to an atmosphere of high expectations and sense of pride in being a pupil at KHS.

Sports – Teams

Boys Football

KHS senior soccer side have reached the Gwent Schools County Final to be played in May 2010 – good luck boys!

Girls Football

KHS Under 16 Girls are through to the 2010 Welsh Final from over 200 schools who started in the competition

Girls Hockey

The following girls all won places in the U14 Area Hockey Squad

Year 8: Fleur Atkins, Megan Stark, Gemma Davies, Rebecca Brinn

Year 7: Sian Phillips, Rebecca Hoyle

A tremendous achievement, especially considering two from Year 7 got into the squad a year young. Well Done Girls.

Boys Rugby 7’s

The U14 team from King Henry School put up a fantastic performance to win the prestigious Monmouth Boys RFC 7’s plate tournament.

Basketball

Congratulations to the year 9 basketball team who won their side of the South Wales semi final and will now progress to the Welsh final in Wrexham in May 2010

Water Polo

King Henry VIII School’s Under 16 Water Polo team won the National Schools ESSA Bowl Tournament. This competition is the 3^rd tier of the National Schools Championship.

Athletics

Students had a clean sweep in the regional round of the Blaenau Gwent Schools Athletics Championships and now send a full team of students in years 9,10 and 11 to the County Final in Brecon in May. (individuals names at the bottom of document)

Sports – Individual

Ceriellen Price - Trampolining

Ceriellen Price Year 7 came first place in the Monmouth Trampoline competition
in March at Monmouth Leisure Centre.

Kayleigh Watkins - Hockey

Kayleigh was chosen to play for the Welsh U16 Hockey Team against Scotland in Cardiff at Easter and has played 3 matches with the team.

Becky James - Cycling

Our World Junior sprint champion has joined Motorpoint Pro-cycling Team. Becky will divide time between training for 2012 Olympics at Welsh National Velodrome and riding with the Motorpoint team led by Ed Clancy MBE.

Jack Vale - Bowls

Jack has been playing bowls for just 2 years but in that short time has achieved selection to play for East Wales Under 16’s and went on to reach the quarter finals of the Welsh Fours with Garin Price (year 10). In February this year Jack was selected to play for the Welsh Indoor Squad Under 18’s.

Other 2010 Successes

Faraday Engineering Challenge

6 year 8 students competed and won £250 and a cup by coming first in the regional round of IET Faraday Engineering Challenge. The team designed an ingenious mechanism for moving water to a height of 300mm. They went onto the UK Final in Manchester where they were narrowly beaten into 3^rd place by schools from Belfast and Dumfries in Scotland. They did, however, secure a further £250 for the school and enjoyed a memorable experience in this national competition.

Times Spelling Bee

4 students from year 7 won the first round of the Times Spelling Bee in Newport in April – Kate Baldock, Jay Detheridge, Bethan Gilson and Owain Powell gave a confident performance against a number of schools in South Wales and Bethan also won the ‘last man standing’ round. The team will now go on to the semi finals in May to be held in Bristol.

Chess Challenge

Brodie Jones in year 9 won the school round of the British Land UK Chess Challenge by scoring the most points in 7 games – over 35 students started in the tournament. The top scorers, including Brodie, are now going onto take part in the Megafinal in Swansea in May.

Aberystwyth Scholarship exams

Three pupils, Jack Coleman, Jessica Jones and Rebecca Winstanley have all been awarded Merit Awards (£1000 per year). Also all now get unconditional University places.

Read a Million Words

Year 7 students attended many great book events and designed a poster and new library card logo which is to be used across all libraries in Monmouthshire.

Youth Speaks

Alice Evans, Mercedes White and Charlotte le Moignan were the winning team in the Senior section of the Rotary Youth Speaks zone competition with their debate “This house believes that seeing is believing”.

Rotary Young Musician

Charlotte Le Moignan won the Abergavenny club competition in the Rotary Young Musician of the year at KHS. She went on to represent Abergavenny Rotary in the zone final in Brynmawr.
