Parent Information

Photograph of KHS Playing FieldsAt King Henry VIII School, parents are viewed as vital partners in ensuring that our children experience success at school. There is a policy to involve parents as much as possible in the education of their children. Information Booklets are issued at important stages of education. Parents are encouraged to meet staff. There is an active Parent Teacher and Community association, which gives strong support to the school.

Below outline details of the school's organization are set out.

Pastoral Organisation

All students are assigned to a tutor group and remain with the same form tutor and Head of Year throughout Year 7 to Year 11. Tutors play an important part in monitoring pastoral, behavioural and learning matters alongside the Head and Assistant Head of Year.

Each Year Group has it own Year Council and also sends representatives to the School Council, which meets at least on a half-termly basis.

We aim to support students, advise and guide them and apply a firm, fair and friendly approach to discipline. The school has a whole school policy on Discipline and Rewards to ensure that there is a consistent approach to classroom behaviour.

An Assistant Headteacher takes responsibility for each Key Stage and works closely with the constituent Year Teams.

Academic Organisation

At King Henry VIII School we provide a curriculum, which is wide ranging, challenging and stimulating. We promote the development of all our students as well as striving to help them attain the highest possible standards.

Subject teaching is delivered by Faculty and Departmental teams. Year 7 is taught in mixed ability groups with setting introduced in Maths before the end of the autumn term.

In Year 8 there is setting and regrouping in some subjects, with mixed ability classes retained until Year 9 in others. In Year 10 a wide range of options leads to a nine-subject GCSE entry in Year 11.

Pupils with learning difficulties receive help from the Department of Education Support in a small group setting and through a mix of withdrawal and in-class support.

We have a two-week timetable with 25 one-hour lessons each week.

There has always been a strong A level intake into the Sixth Form. In addition to the 27 AS/A2 level courses offered, there are also opportunities for students in the sixth form to retake Mathematics and English at GCSE. The Sixth Form curriculum also provides the opportunity for some students to undertake a qualification in General Studies.

Careers, Higher Education and Work Experience

Careers Education is an integral part of the school's Pastoral Programme. All pupils have two week's work experience at the end of Year 10. A further week of Work Experience is made available at the start of Year 13 and there are additional opportunities for those on vocational courses.

A high proportion of Year 11 students stay on in full time education. The majority of students leaving the Sixth Form enter Higher Education. A large number of students from the Sixth Form gain places at Universities and some 100 students submitted UCAS applications this year.
